Technology & planning

Precision Begins Before Surgery

PBNJ uses advanced imaging and patient-specific planning to help the surgeon prepare for joint replacement procedures.

For appropriate hip and knee replacement procedures, Mako robotic-arm assisted technology uses a CT-based 3D plan and gives the surgeon real-time guidance during surgery. The surgeon remains in control of the procedure. PBNJ also uses 3D planning for appropriate shoulder replacement cases.

From Evaluation Through Recovery

  • Confirm the source of pain and review X-rays or other imaging
  • Discuss nonoperative treatment when appropriate
  • Choose the procedure that best fits your condition and goals
  • Plan surgery and rehabilitation
  • Coordinate postoperative follow-up and physical therapy

When Is It Time to Discuss Joint Replacement?

Patients commonly consider a surgical consultation when joint pain interferes with walking, sleep, work or activities they value, and simpler treatments are no longer providing adequate relief. A consultation does not commit you to surgery; it is an opportunity to understand the diagnosis and compare options.

Recovery Is Individual

Recovery depends on the joint being replaced, the procedure, your general health and your starting level of function. Your surgeon and therapy team will provide a plan for activity, pain control, wound care, rehabilitation and return to daily activities.

This information is educational and does not replace an individual evaluation. Recommendations and recovery timelines vary by patient.
