Rotator Cuff Tear

Rotator cuff tears can cause shoulder pain, weakness and difficulty reaching or lifting.

What Is Rotator Cuff Tear?

The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that help stabilize and move the shoulder. Tears may occur suddenly after injury or develop gradually from tendon degeneration over time.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain when raising or lowering the arm
  • Night pain, especially when lying on the affected side
  • Weakness with lifting or rotation
  • Difficulty reaching overhead or behind the back
  • Pain after a fall or sudden shoulder injury

How It Is Diagnosed

Evaluation includes strength and motion testing. X-rays assess the bones and arthritis, while ultrasound or MRI may be used to evaluate the tendons when needed.

Nonsurgical Treatment

Treatment begins with the diagnosis, symptom severity and your goals. Options may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Physical therapy to improve shoulder mechanics and strength
  • Medication when appropriate
  • Selected injections
  • Gradual return to activity based on symptoms and function

When Surgery May Be Considered

Surgery may be considered for selected full-thickness tears, acute traumatic tears, persistent weakness or pain that does not improve adequately with nonsurgical treatment. Tear size, tendon quality, age and activity goals all matter.

This page provides general educational information. Symptoms can have more than one cause, and treatment recommendations should be based on an individual evaluation.
