Meniscus Tear

A torn meniscus can cause knee pain, swelling, catching or difficulty with twisting and squatting.

What Is Meniscus Tear?

The menisci are two C-shaped pads of cartilage that help distribute load and provide stability in the knee. Tears can occur during twisting injuries or develop gradually as the tissue changes with age.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain along the inner or outer joint line
  • Swelling after activity or injury
  • Catching, clicking or a sense of locking
  • Pain with twisting, pivoting or deep bending
  • Difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee

How It Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis begins with the history and physical examination. X-rays can look for arthritis or other bone problems, while MRI may be useful when the diagnosis or treatment plan is uncertain.

Nonsurgical Treatment

Treatment begins with the diagnosis, symptom severity and your goals. Options may include:

  • Temporary activity modification
  • Ice and medication when appropriate
  • Physical therapy to restore motion and strength
  • Gradual return to activity
  • Observation for tears that are not causing significant mechanical symptoms

When Surgery May Be Considered

Arthroscopic surgery may be considered for selected tears that remain symptomatic, cause persistent mechanical problems or occur in a pattern that may be repairable. Not every meniscus tear requires surgery.

This page provides general educational information. Symptoms can have more than one cause, and treatment recommendations should be based on an individual evaluation.
